Samson’s Mother — The Mother Who Received God’s Instruction

Samson’s Mother — The Mother Who Received God’s Instruction
The mother of Samson is one of the few women
in Scripture whose personal name is never recorded,
yet her story in Judges 13 reveals remarkable
faith, humility, and attentiveness to God.

She lived during the time of the Judges,
when Israel repeatedly turned away
from the Lord and suffered under oppression
from the Philistines because of their disobedience.

Scripture tells us that Manoah’s wife
was barren and unable to have children.
In the ancient world, this often
carried sorrow and shame.

Yet in the midst of her waiting,
the Angel of the Lord appeared to her
with a message of hope, she would
bear a son who would begin to deliver
Israel from the Philistines (Judges 13:5).

Unlike many in the period of the Judges
who ignored God’s ways, Samson’s mother
listened carefully to the Lord’s instruction.
The angel commanded that both she
and the child were to live under
Nazirite dedication to God.
She was instructed to avoid wine
and unclean food because her son
was to be set apart for God from birth.

Her response was marked by humility and obedience.
She faithfully relayed God’s message to her husband
and took seriously the responsibility
God had entrusted to her.

When Manoah later feared they would die
after encountering the Angel of the Lord,
Samson’s mother responded with quiet wisdom and trust,
recognizing that God’s actions revealed mercy
rather than judgment (Judges 13:23).

Her relationship with God is seen
not through dramatic speeches,
but through reverence, obedience,
discernment, and faith.

In a spiritually dark time in Israel’s history,
she demonstrated sensitivity to God’s voice
and submission to His instruction.

Although Samson himself later struggled greatly
with compromise and disobedience,
his mother’s example still stands
as one of faithful devotion.

Her story reminds us that parents
can faithfully teach and dedicate their children
to God even while knowing that every child
must ultimately choose whether
to walk in obedience themselves.
