CAN THE DEAD COMMUNICATE WITH THE LIVING?

The Bible gives a serious warning about attempting to communicate with the dead. Scripture does not present contacting deceased people as a normal or acceptable way for believers to receive guidance, messages, or spiritual information.

1. God forbids seeking the dead

God explicitly warned Israel against consulting mediums, spiritists, or attempting to communicate with the dead:

“There shall not be found among you any one… that useth divination… or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.”

Deuteronomy 18:10–11

The reason is clear:

“For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD.”

Deuteronomy 18:12

God wants His people to seek Him, not the dead or spiritual intermediaries.

2. The Bible teaches that the dead cannot return to ordinary earthly life

Ecclesiastes says:

“The dead know not any thing.”

Ecclesiastes 9:5

It also says:

“Neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.”

Ecclesiastes 9:6

Job describes the boundary of death this way:

“So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake.”

Job 14:12

These passages emphasize that death is not presented as a doorway through which deceased people freely come back to communicate with the living.

3. What about Saul and Samuel?

Some people point to 1 Samuel 28, where King Saul consulted a medium and Samuel appeared.

This passage is unusual and difficult, but notice something important: Saul had already rebelled against God, and Scripture had condemned his consultation of a medium (1 Samuel 28:6–7). The passage certainly does not establish a biblical practice of communicating with deceased relatives.

In fact, the Chronicler gives Saul’s consultation of the medium as part of the reason for his judgment:

“So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD… and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit.”

1 Chronicles 10:13

4. Be careful with dreams, visions, and supernatural experiences

Someone may dream about a deceased loved one or feel that they received a message from them. The experience may feel extremely real.

But Christians should not automatically conclude that the dead person is communicating with them.

The Bible tells us:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.”

1 John 4:1

Our standard is not an experience, it is the Word of God.

5. There is another danger: deception

The Bible teaches that Satan can deceive people:

“Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

2 Corinthians 11:14

Therefore, if something appears supernatural, that does not automatically mean it is from God or that it is actually the spirit of a deceased person.

This is why God tells us not to seek supernatural guidance from mediums or the dead.

6. Our hope is not communication with the dead it is resurrection

Christianity does not teach us to seek the dead. It teaches us to look forward to the resurrection.

Jesus said:

“I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

John 11:25

And Paul teaches that believers who have died will be raised:

“The dead in Christ shall rise first.”

1 Thessalonians 4:16

That is our hope: not communicating with the dead, but being reunited with them in the resurrection according to God’s promise.

FINAL MESSAGE

Do not seek messages from the dead. Seek Jesus.

Do not consult mediums.

Do not attempt to summon the dead.

Do not build your faith on supernatural experiences.

If you need guidance, pray to God and search His Word.

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

Isaiah 8:20

The dead are not our source of guidance. Jesus Christ is.
