Og — King of Bashan

(Numbers 21:33–35; Deuteronomy 3:1–11)

 

Og was the Amorite king of Bashan, east of the Jordan, and the last surviving giant of the Rephaim. His massive iron bed—over thirteen feet long—revealed his extraordinary size . He ruled sixty walled cities and a fertile, powerful kingdom .

 

As Israel neared the Promised Land, Og marched out at Edrei to destroy them. The people naturally feared such a foe, but God told Moses: “Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hand” . Israel fought and completely defeated Og—king, army, and people—conquering his entire land .

 

His story reminds us: the world may raise up giants that seem too great to face, but no size, strength, or fortress can stand against God’s purpose. When He says “do not fear,” the most intimidating obstacles become stepping stones. Og’s fall declares that victory does not depend on our strength—it depends on God’s hand.
