SAMSON TURNED THREE HUNDRED FOXES INTO LIVING FIREBRANDS

Samson returned to visit his wife, only to discover her father had given her to another man. Enraged, Samson declared that the Philistines would bear the blame for what came next.

He captured three hundred foxes, tied them together in pairs by their tails, and fastened a burning torch between each pair. Then he released them into the Philistines’ fields.

Panic tore across the land.

The animals raced through standing grain, stacked sheaves, vineyards, and olive groves. Fire followed every frantic path until the Philistines watched their harvest—and their wealth—vanish beneath the flames.

When they learned Samson was responsible because his wife had been given away, they retaliated by burning the woman and her father to death.

But their brutality only intensified Samson’s fury. He struck them with a great slaughter before withdrawing to the rock of Etam.

One personal betrayal had ignited a chain of vengeance, and an entire nation’s fields burned in its wake.
