THE TRUTH ABOUT ANOINTING OIL & "HOLY WATER": WHAT DOES THE BIBLE REALLY SAY?

Today, many churches sell small bottles of "anointing oil" and "holy water," promising healing, protection, breakthroughs, prosperity, or deliverance. But an important question every believer should ask is this:

Did Jesus or the apostles ever tell Christians to buy these items?

Let's examine what the Bible actually says.

1. THE FIRST ANOINTING OIL WAS COMMANDED BY GOD

The first mention of sacred anointing oil is found in the Old Testament.

📖 Exodus 30:22–33

God instructed Moses to prepare a special holy anointing oil from specific spices. This oil was not for ordinary use. It was used to consecrate the Tabernacle, its furniture, and priests who served before God.

Notice something important:

- It was made according to God's exact instructions.

- It was never sold for profit.

- God warned against making it for common or commercial use.

The oil symbolized being set apart for God's service.

2. KINGS AND PRIESTS WERE ANOINTED

Throughout the Old Testament, oil was used when God appointed leaders.

📖 1 Samuel 16:13

Samuel anointed David with oil, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.

📖 Leviticus 8:12

Aaron was anointed as high priest.

The oil itself did not give power. It represented God's choice and the work of His Spirit.

3. THE DISCIPLES USED OIL WHEN PRAYING FOR THE SICK

Jesus' disciples also used oil.

📖 Mark 6:13

"They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them."

The emphasis was never on selling oil. Healing came through God's power, not because the oil possessed magical properties.

4. JAMES ALSO MENTIONED OIL

📖 James 5:14–15

"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."

Notice the pattern:

- The elders prayed.

- Faith was placed in God.

- There is no instruction to purchase oil.

- The oil accompanied prayer; it did not replace faith.

5. WHAT ABOUT HOLY WATER?

Many people assume holy water is found throughout Scripture.

The truth is that the Bible never instructs believers to make, sell, or carry bottles of holy water for protection or miracles.

Some point to 📖 Numbers 5:17, where a priest mixed holy water with dust during a unique Old Testament ceremony involving suspected adultery.

Others mention purification rituals involving water under the Law of Moses.

However:

- None of these passages tell Christians to keep holy water for blessings.

- Jesus never distributed holy water.

- The apostles never bottled or sold holy water.

Instead, Jesus pointed people to faith in Him.

6. WHERE DID THE PRACTICE OF HOLY WATER COME FROM?

The widespread practice of blessing water developed centuries after the New Testament church, becoming part of church traditions in some Christian communities.

While many believers use blessed water as a reminder of God's grace, the Bible itself does not teach that bottled holy water has supernatural power.

7. DID JESUS OR THE APOSTLES EVER SELL ANOINTING OIL OR HOLY WATER?

The answer is no.

Jesus healed without selling objects.

Peter healed without charging money.

Paul never marketed miracle products.

When a man named Simon tried to obtain God's power with money, Peter strongly rebuked him.

📖 Acts 8:18–23

God's gifts cannot be bought or sold.

8. WHAT SHOULD BELIEVERS TRUST?

The Bible consistently points believers toward:

- Faith in Jesus Christ.

- The power of the Holy Spirit.

- Prayer.

- Obedience to God's Word.

Oil may serve as a biblical symbol during prayer, but Scripture never teaches that purchasing oil or water guarantees miracles, protection, prosperity, or deliverance.

Our confidence should never rest in a bottle—it should rest in Christ alone.

📖 Psalm 20:7

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."

The greatest anointing is not found in oil. It is the presence of the Holy Spirit living within those who belong to Jesus.

📖 1 John 2:20, 27

Believers have received an anointing from the Holy One, and His Spirit teaches and guides them.
