WHO IS THE WOMAN RIDING THE BEAST?

WHO IS THE WOMAN RIDING THE BEAST?

One of the most mysterious and controversial visions in the entire Book of Revelation is found in Revelation chapter 17.

John saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast.

She was dressed in purple and scarlet.

She was adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls.

In her hand was a golden cup full of abominations.

And upon her forehead was written a mysterious name:

MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

Revelation 17:5

For centuries, believers have asked:

Who is this woman?

Is she a literal woman?

Is she a particular city?

Is she a false religious system?

Is she a political power?

Is she a worldwide system that has not yet fully risen?

This subject has caused serious disagreement in the body of Christ.

But one thing is very clear.

Whatever Babylon represents, God does not want His people to become part of her corruption.

THE WOMAN AND THE BEAST ARE NOT THE SAME

This is one of the first things we must understand.

The woman is sitting upon the beast.

The beast carries the woman.

This means they are connected, but they are not identical.

Revelation 17:3 says:

“So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast...”

The beast represents a powerful system of authority, kingdom, or rulership connected with the end-time rebellion against God.

The woman represents something that is being supported by, connected to, and benefiting from this beastly power.

But later, something shocking happens.

The very beast that carries the woman eventually turns against her.

Revelation 17:16 says:

“And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.”

Think about that.

The system that carried her eventually destroys her.

This reveals an important spiritual lesson:

THE WORLDLY POWERS YOU DEPEND ON TODAY MAY DESTROY YOU TOMORROW.

Babylon trusted in her power.

She trusted in her influence.

She trusted in her wealth.

She trusted in her relationships with earthly rulers.

But the same evil system she was connected with eventually turned against her.

A FALSE RELIGIOUS SYSTEM?

Many believers believe the woman represents a corrupt religious system.

Why?

Because throughout Scripture, God often used the picture of adultery and prostitution to describe spiritual unfaithfulness.

When God's people turned away from Him and gave their hearts to idols, God described their unfaithfulness using the language of spiritual adultery.

Therefore, the woman being called “the mother of harlots” strongly suggests spiritual corruption.

She has the appearance of beauty.

She is dressed in expensive clothing.

She is decorated with gold and precious stones.

She holds a golden cup.

From the outside, everything appears attractive.

But inside the cup are abominations.

THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST WARNINGS IN REVELATION.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT LOOKS HOLY IS HOLY.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL IS PURE.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT USES THE NAME OF GOD IS APPROVED BY GOD.

NOT EVERYTHING THAT CARRIES RELIGIOUS LANGUAGE CARRIES THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST.

A person can have religion without repentance.

A church can have crowds without truth.

A preacher can have influence without holiness.

A ministry can have wealth without God's approval.

The cup may be golden.

But what is inside it?

THE WOMAN REPRESENTS MORE THAN RELIGION ALONE

Revelation 17:18 gives us another important clue:

“And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.”

This is why there are different interpretations.

The woman is described as a city.

Yet she is also described in the language of spiritual corruption.

She is connected with kings.

She influences the nations.

She is connected with wealth.

She commits fornication with rulers.

She is drunk with power.

Therefore, many Bible students understand Babylon as representing a powerful system of spiritual, political, economic, and moral corruption.

The warning is bigger than identifying one name.

The deeper question is:

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF BABYLON?

The spirit of Babylon is rebellion against God mixed with human pride, deception, luxury, immorality, and the desire to control and influence the world.

Babylon is what happens when people want the blessings of God without the authority of God.

It is religion without true repentance.

It is wealth without holiness.

It is influence without truth.

It is power without righteousness.

It is a form of godliness that has become corrupted by the love of the world.

BABYLON WANTS TO MAKE COMPROMISE LOOK NORMAL

One of the greatest dangers of Babylon is that it makes corruption attractive.

The woman is not first described as ugly.

She is decorated.

She is attractive.

She is powerful.

She appears successful.

This is how deception often works.

Satan does not always present evil in a frightening form.

Sometimes he presents it as success.

Sometimes as freedom.

Sometimes as prosperity.

Sometimes as popularity.

Sometimes as religion.

The danger is not only obvious darkness.

THE GREATEST DECEPTION CAN COME WHEN DARKNESS WEARS THE CLOTHES OF LIGHT.

This is why believers must have discernment.

Do not follow something simply because it is popular.

Do not believe something simply because millions accept it.

Do not accept a message simply because it sounds spiritual.

Test everything by the Word of God.

THE FINAL CALL OF GOD IS:

“COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE.”

Revelation 18:4 says:

“Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins...”

Notice something powerful.

God still has people who are connected with Babylon.

That means a person can love God sincerely and still be surrounded by deception, compromise, false teaching, or worldly influence.

But when truth comes, God calls His people to come out.

Come out of falsehood.

Come out of compromise.

Come out of spiritual corruption.

Come out of worldly Christianity.

Come out of loving the world more than Christ.

Come out of anything that demands your loyalty above Jesus.

The purpose of this teaching is not to point at one church, one denomination, one nation, or one individual and proudly say, “That is Babylon.”

We must be careful.

Revelation gives us warnings so that we can examine ourselves.

Before accusing everyone else of being Babylon, ask yourself:

Have I mixed my faith with the love of the world?

Am I compromising truth to be accepted?

Do I want success more than holiness?

Have I become more concerned about earthly gain than eternal life?

Am I following Christ, or am I following a system that merely uses His name?

THE WOMAN RIDING THE BEAST IS A WARNING TO EVERY GENERATION.

Do not be deceived by outward beauty.

Do not drink from a golden cup simply because the cup is beautiful.

Examine what is inside.

Do not follow power blindly.

Do not confuse popularity with truth.

Do not confuse wealth with God's approval.

And do not confuse religion with salvation.

The true Bride of Christ prepares herself for her Bridegroom.

Babylon seduces the nations.

The Bride remains faithful.

Babylon intoxicates people with deception.

The Bride follows the Lamb.

Babylon seeks earthly glory.

The Bride waits for eternal glory.

THE QUESTION IS NOT ONLY, “WHO IS THE WOMAN?”

THE DEEPER QUESTION IS:

AM I DRINKING FROM THE SPIRIT OF BABYLON, OR AM I PREPARING AS THE BRIDE OF CHRIST?

Child of God, this is the hour to return to purity.

Return to truth.

Return to holiness.

Return to complete obedience to Christ.

Do not allow Babylon to change your convictions.

Do not allow the world to redefine your faith.

Stay with Jesus.

Stay with His Word.

Stay separate from corruption.

And prepare yourself for the coming of the Bridegroom.

“Come out of her, my people.”

Revelation 18:4

May the Lord give us spiritual eyes to recognize deception, courage to reject compromise, and grace to remain faithful until the end. Amen. 🙏
