IS MASTURBATION A SIN ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

The Bible does not explicitly mention masturbation by name, so it would be inaccurate to say, “The Bible says masturbation is a sin” as a direct command.

However, the Bible gives principles that Christians use to evaluate it.

1. What is happening in the mind matters

Jesus said:

“Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28

Masturbation is often accompanied by sexual fantasies or lust. If someone deliberately entertains lustful thoughts, that is clearly something Scripture warns against.

2. Christians are called to sexual purity

Paul says:

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication. 1 Thessalonians 4:3

And:

“Flee fornication. 1 Corinthians 6:18

So the broader biblical question is not merely, “Is the physical act mentioned?” but “Is what I am doing helping me live in sexual purity and self-control?”

3. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22–23 lists self-control among the fruit produced by the Spirit.

If masturbation becomes compulsive, controls someone, or continually feeds sexual lust, it can become spiritually and personally destructive.

4. What about Onan?

Some people use Genesis 38:8–10 to say masturbation is explicitly condemned. But the passage is actually about Onan’s refusal to fulfill his family obligation and his deliberate spilling of semen in that context. The text does not specifically say, “Masturbation is a sin.”

Therefore, using Onan as a direct proof-text against masturbation is not very strong biblical interpretation.

So, is masturbation a sin?

The Bible does not explicitly call masturbation a sin. But if masturbation involves lust, pornography, sexual fantasy, lack of self-control, or becomes an enslaving habit, those accompanying behaviors and attitudes conflict with biblical principles.

A useful question for a Christian is:

“Can I do this with a clear conscience before God, while honoring my body, controlling my desires, and keeping my thoughts pure?”

Paul gives an important principle:

“Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

So rather than creating a rule the Bible itself doesn’t state, Christians should examine the heart, thoughts, motives, and self-control involved.
