When Michal Watched David Dance

When Michal Watched David Dance

The ark of the Lord was coming into Jerusalem. David and the people celebrated with singing, instruments, and sacrifices as they brought it into the city.

David was filled with joy. He danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a linen ephod. It was a moment of worship.

But someone watched from a different place.

Michal, Saul's daughter and David's wife, looked down from a window. She saw the king leaping and dancing. Michal despised him in her heart.

The Bible says:

“And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.” 2 Samuel 6:16 (KJV)

From her window, Michal saw David dance without sharing his joy.

Scripture does not tell us every thought Michal had. It tells us she despised David.

Later, she confronted David about how he had behaved in public. David answered that his dancing was before the Lord. He remembered that God had chosen him, and he was willing to humble himself as he celebrated God's goodness. He did not hide his gratitude because people were watching.

His answer invites us to consider whom we are trying to please when we worship.

Sometimes we watch another person's worship and decide it looks too expressive. Sometimes we look at their quieter way of praying and assume their heart is cold. We can be quick to judge from a distance.

Only God sees the whole heart. We cannot know every motive behind a person's tears, silence, or song.

Michal's place at the window also invites a personal question: Are we looking at what God is doing as spectators, while resentment keeps us from giving Him thanks?

If disappointment has settled in your heart, bring it to the Lord honestly. You do not have to pretend to feel joy. Ask Him to show you what is hurting and to help you resist contempt.

And if someone has mocked your sincere worship, take courage. Your devotion to God does not have to win every person's approval. You can remain humble and keep your attention on Him.

There is a difference between worshiping freely and seeking an audience. David said he danced before the Lord. That simple phrase gives us a way to examine our own praise.

When you sing, pray, serve, or give thanks, remember who receives it. A whispered prayer in a hard season can be as sincere as a joyful song in a crowd.

Jesus knows what it is to be misunderstood. People questioned Him and looked down on those who drew near to Him. Yet He welcomed the humble and called people to worship the Father in spirit and in truth.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus opens the way for us to come to God. We do not have to earn a place near Him by performing for others. We can bring Him our honest hearts and receive His grace.

Ask the Lord to guard you from despising someone whose worship looks different from yours. Ask Him, too, to free you from the fear of being watched when you want to honor Him.

The ark entered the city amid joyful praise. Michal saw the same moment from her window and responded with contempt. Where will your heart turn when you see another person rejoice before the Lord?
